Coordinate Conversion
When you run the Surveyor Pocket Tools you will see the main dialog shown all the tools with the icon on the left and the name of the tool in blue label at top right close to the icon. The green label at bottom right is a description explain the function of the tool. The screenshot below shows the highlight active of UTM – Geo Converter tool, double click to run the tool.
You will see the simplicity window as the screenshot below shows the UTM – Geo Converter tool. There are two panels left and right:
UTM or projected coordinates is on the left panel consists of Point Name, Northing, Easting and selection of UTM Zone No.
Geographic or geographic coordinates is on the right panel consists of Point Name, Latitude, Longitude and selection of Angle format.
At the middle of the dialog, there are two big buttons and
with the arrow icon point to right and left. These arrows are represented of computation from UTM to Geo and Geo to UTM respectively.
The two small buttons and
with the marker icon are represented of Store point to database and Restore point from database respectively. The markers places at the left panel use when to store/restore point of UTM coordinates. The markers places at the right panel use when to store/restore point of Geographic coordinates.
Another two small buttons and
at the bottom of the dialog are used to “Pin to Google Maps” and “Save to KML file” respectively.
Convert UTM to Geo Coordinates
Before coordinate coversion you may need to know some basic tips and tricks to define the angle display formats for input geodetic coordinates in terms of latitude and longitude and the tricks for using store/restore point on Geo Database.
Define Display Formats and Input Geodetic Coordinates
There are many possible display formats for geographic or geodetic coordinates (latitude/longitude). Follow the link below for tutorial how to define angle display settings and input geodetic coordinates.

Store the Point to Database and Restore the point from database
If you need to save a input or output point into database called Geo Database. Please follow the tutorial link:
This paragraph will illustrate how to use the tool with some samples test.
- Given UTM coordinates on WGS84/UTM: Point Name = 006-031, Grid Northing(N) = 1575407.005m, Grid Easting(E) = 707105.198m, UTM Zone 47N. Find the WGS84 geographic coordinates.
Enter the coordinates value on the left panel at Point Name, Northing, Easting text boxes and select the UTM Zone No by scrolling the combo box until you find “UTM Zone 47N“.
On the right panel you will see the “Angle format” is DD°MM’SS.SSSS” by default. Don’t change it right now. Now is ready to compute by click the arrow point to the right. Please see the screenshot below.
The computation results are Latitude = 14°14’33.24018″N and Longitude = 100°55’10.26296″E. Please note the angle display format of the latitude and longitude are correspondence to DD°MM’SS.SSSS” as aforementioned.
On the right panel, change the angle format to “Degree” and see the result as below. The latitude and longitude will be changed to decimal degree.

When we see latitude and longitude sometimes can not imagine where is it location? The tool provide the feature to pin the marker on the Google Maps. Click to and the tool will activate the web dialog of Google Maps as the screenshot below. You will see the red marker pin to the map and you can zoom-in or zoom-out while the internet is online.
Convert Geo to UTM Coordinates
The next example will show the coordinate conversion from geodetic coordinates to UTM coordinates.
- Given the WGS84 geodetic coordinates: Latitude = 17°52’58.262″S, Longitude = 36°53’13.336″E, Point Name = QLM. Find the coordinates on WGS84/UTM.
Enter the coordinates value to the right panel as below and click the left arrow to compute the UTM coordinates.
The results will be shown as below and please note the “UTM zone 37S“ is correct.
Display in Google Earth
Click the button that same as pin to Google Maps but the tool will ask you to save the KML file first. Please select the folder and type the file name and then the tool will activate the Google Earth and show the yellow marker with description.
UTM – Geo Converter is a tool to calculate coordinate conversion between geodetic coordinates (latitude/longitude) to UTM projected coordinates or vice versa.
